Steel Services, Inc. Honored with MSCI Safety Culture Improvement Award
We're thrilled to announce that Steel Services, Inc. has been recognized by the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) with the prestigious Safety Culture Improvement Award! This honor is a powerful validation of our company-wide commitment to fostering a Zero Harm, Safety Always environment for every employee.
The annual MSCI awards recognize industrial metals companies that implement innovative strategies to dramatically enhance worker safety and engagement. This award reflects the collective effort and daily dedication of our entire team.
A Commitment to Continuous Safety Improvement
Steel Services earned the Safety Culture Improvement Award for the dramatic results achieved through a focused, multi-year initiative aimed at revitalizing our safety culture and preserving essential institutional knowledge.
To achieve this transformation, Steel Services entered a three-year partnership with OnPoint Industrial Safety Services (formerly Optimum Safety). This strategic collaboration acted as a catalyst, powering a number of significant safety improvements:
- Establishing New Safety Leadership Positions: Creating dedicated roles to champion and oversee safety initiatives.
- Adopting New Technology: Implementing tools and systems to radically improve safety tracking and performance.
- Celebrating Safety Milestones: Bringing our teams together to highlight our successes, gather ideas for future endeavors, and enjoy well-earned downtime with one another.
Measurable Results in Incident Reduction
The success of this initiative is not just in policy—it’s in the numbers. Since implementation, Steel Services has seen key safety performance indicators improve significantly, demonstrating that our continuous improvement practices are truly making a difference:
Safety Metric |
2023 Rate |
2024 Rate |
Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) |
12.29 |
8.66 |
Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR) |
7.17 |
3.71 |
Our reduction in both TRIR and LTIR confirms that our strategies are effectively lowering our teammates' exposure to potential harm.
Validation from Industry Leaders
MSCI President and CEO M. Robert Weidner, III, specifically praised the awardees' efforts: "MSCI and its members are committed to building a Zero Harm, Safety Always culture... There is no higher priority than ensuring our team gets home safely every day.”
